FIVE TIME BROADWAY STAR TO TEACH AT THE MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE!

Jupiter, FL (October 27, 2008) - Billy Porter, one of the most talented young stars on Broadway having appeared in shows such as Miss Saigon, Five Guys Named Moe, Smokey Joe's Café and Grease, will be teaching a two-day workshop at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre's Conservatory of Performing Arts (COPA), Thursday and Friday, November 13th and 14th.

Billy started his theatre career at the age of twelve in Pittsburgh with Judy Gelman, now the Director of Education at COPA. "Billy was one of those students who lived, ate, slept and breathed the arts. He had a wonderful voice, but couldn't act or dance when he started to study in Pittsburgh. Billy had to take two busses everyday to get to classes and at night, different parents would drive him home. He never stopped working, studying, believing. And then, when he "made it" he never forgot to come back to his community to help teach others," says Gelman.

Billy won ‘Vocalist of the Year' on the original Star Search, and his film, "The Broken Hearts Club," won the G.L.A.A.D. Media Award at the Sundance Festival. He also has film and TV experience including roles in movies with Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams. As a Director, Choreographer and Producer, Billy provides knowledge in a range of disciplines useful in aiding students through this workshop.

Billy performed in a Broadway concert of Dreamgirls produced by Andrew Kato, Artistic Director of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, who says, "Billy is one of the most talented artists on Broadway and provides a wealth of talent from his diverse experience on and off of Broadway. The Theatre is thrilled to have Billy visit Jupiter and work with our local youth."

The two-day workshop at COPA will feature an ‘open-mike' night with Billy on Thursday, November 13th from 6 - 8pm. Students can bring their own CD and perform Rock, Broadway, Gospel, Classical or any other musical preference for Billy. This is their opportunity to get to know Billy Porter, learn about his personal theatre experiences and even watch him perform.

On Friday November 14th from 4:30 - 8:30pm, students will be able to present an entire vocal selection and a one-minute monologue for Billy to critique and discuss. A pizza party will follow the workshop at 8:30pm to include all students and parents. This unique workshop is limited to 20 students for the cost of $150 and requires attendees to bring a headshot or school photo.

COPA offers classes in dance, voice, acting and musical theatre as well as workshops featuring local and national talent throughout the year. The Theatre is able to draw from an amazing talent pool that comes from producing professional theatre each season. Past workshops have included Ron DeJesus, assistant choreographer to Twyla Tharp, Rodger Hess, the producer of Annie on Broadway and Jackie Bayne, from the Broadway cast of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

As a not-for-profit theatre the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, recognizing the importance of arts education for youth, has made its mission to "entertain, educate and inspire." COPA offers a challenging, innovative and quality theatre experience to students of every ability and provides professional theatre training as well as tools to develop their imagination and self-esteem.
