MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE ANNOUNCES $10 MILLION ENDOWMENT
Campaign to secure the Theatre’s future includes a three-to-one matching challenge grant from the Maltz Family Foundation
Jan. 26, 2012 (Jupiter) – The Maltz Family Foundation has announced an exceptional gift: a three-to-one matching challenge grant to secure a $10 million endowment for the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.
The challenge requires the Theatre to raise $2.5 million by June 30, 2012, to receive $7 million from the foundation. This, added to its existing $500,000, will bring the total endowment level to $10 million.
The endowment is an investment in the future, providing ongoing financial security while enabling continued excellence and innovation. The principal of the fund will be carefully invested and remain whole, with earnings that will support the Theatre’s artistic and educational programs on an ongoing basis.
“We have been privileged to provide financial stability that the theatre needs to remain an artistic jewel in our community,” said Milton Maltz, founder and chairman of the Theatre’s board of directors. “We encourage the rest of the community to join us in ensuring its future.”
During an initial quiet phase, the Theatre has raised more than $1.62 million for the endowment. Now, the Theatre needs to raise an additional $875,000 to secure the $7 million match.
“Please help us to keep great theater alive,” said the Theatre’s managing director, Tricia Trimble. “We need the community’s help to achieve our goal by June 30, with donations that can be made in multi-year pledges. I cannot emphasize how much of a difference this endowment could make for our Theatre and the region.”
The Theatre has formed a separate 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization – the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Endowment – with the sole purpose of investing funds and supporting projects that will secure the Theatre’s future. Harvey Golub, former CEO and chairman of American Express, will serve as chairman of the endowment board, and Theatre board members Milton Maltz and Joan Bildner will also join the new board.
“It’s incredible to imagine what this Theatre could become over the next ten years supported by a $10 endowment,” Golub said. “Like any nonprofit theatre, ticket sales and subscriptions are never enough to sustain operations. An endowment will provide the Maltz Jupiter Theatre with the opportunity to dream big, plan wisely and have the financial resources to provide a rich cultural life for our community.”
Since its inception nine seasons ago, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre has become one of Florida’s preeminent professional theatres, committed to artistic excellence, production and education through its collaborations with local and national artists. As the state’s largest award-winning regional theatre, the Theatre boasts a subscription base of more than 7,000 and has world-class classroom facilities in support of its Conservatory of Performing Arts, which serves hundreds of youth and adults.
“When reached, this unprecedented offer will enable the Theatre to continue growing far into the future,” said the Theatre’s artistic director, Andrew Kato. “It will ensure the Theatre’s ability to continue producing classic musicals and dramatic works, develop visionary new work, maintain state-of-the-art facilities for our Theatre and Conservatory and remain a cultural treasure in the community.”

THE MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE’S ‘RED’ OFFERS A PROVOCATIVE PORTRAIT OF ARTIST MARK ROTHKO
This thrilling new American play and winner of the 2010 Tony® Award, ‘Red’ takes a novel look at Rothko and the assistant who challenges his ambition
January 23, 2012 (Jupiter) – “There is only one thing I fear in life, my friend... One day the black will swallow the red,” abstract expressionist Mark Rothko laments in John Logan’s Red.
A thrilling new American play and winner of the 2010 Tony Award®, Red at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre (February 14 through 26) offers a provocative portrait of the famed Jewish artist as he works feverishly in his studio on the Bowery to complete the biggest commission in the history of modern art. When his assistant challenges his ambition, Rothko is faced with the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also be his undoing.
“We are so happy to be producing such a monumental, visceral new drama as part of our season,” said the Theatre’s artistic director, Andrew Kato. “We are stretching our programming and challenging our audiences with our play and musical selection, and this award-winning show reflects that.”
One of the most acclaimed – and often unhappy – artists of the 20th century, Red focuses on Rothko as he paints a group of murals for the luxurious and exclusive Four Seasons restaurant. He gives orders to his assistant, Ken, as he mixes the paints, makes the frames, and paints the canvases onstage with his signature style of filling oversized canvases with luminous color. Ken, however, brashly questions Rothko's theories, and conflict ensues between teacher and student.
In reviewing the Broadway production, Variety called it “majestic” and the Associated Press called the show an “engrossing, often enthralling new play about art, an artist and the act of creation.”
The show won six of its seven 2010 Tony® Award nominations, including Best Play, and received the most wins out of any other theatrical production that season. It also received several Drama League and Drama Desk awards the same year.
“This play centers on the tense polarities that exist between young and old, employer and employee, master and apprentice, mentor and mentee, father and son,” said Red’s director, Lou Jacob. “Rothko warns his assistant Ken, ‘Consider; I am not your rabbi, I am not your father, I am not your shrink, I am not your friend, I am not your teacher – I am your employer. You understand?’ Despite Rothko’s blunt disclaimer, he becomes all of these, and we come to understand the combustible energy that existed within Rothko’s studio.”
A notable stage veteran, Jacob has directed new plays, musicals, classics and adaptations in the United States and across Europe and Asia. He has received numerous Drama Desk nominations for his work, including the recent Off-Broadway productions The God of Hell and Hard Times. His play Night Train to the Stars premiered in Tokyo at the Metropolitan Theatre.
“’Rothkos,’ as his pictures are named, exist like windows, challenging the viewer to enter – while also acting as a lens, forcing the viewer to look inward,” he added. “Through Rothko, John Logan has created an event that demands an active participant to speak, argue and ask themselves, ‘What do you see?’”

MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE’S NINTH ANNUAL GALA ‘WE’VE GOT ELEGANCE’ RAISES $430,000
Jan. 23, 2012 (Jupiter) – The Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s ninth annual gala, “We’ve Got Elegance,” raised nearly $430,000 for the not-for-profit Theatre.
More than 330 people attended the benefit, held at The Breakers Palm Beach. Inspired by the Theatre’s upcoming production of the Tony Award®-winning musical Hello, Dolly! (March 13 – April1), the spectacular affair transported guests back to the glamour of the turn of the twentieth century, complete with magnificent floral and feather hat table centerpieces, guests in glittering gowns, splendid pink and purple lighting and more.
The exquisite evening included a performance of the song One Voice by children from the Theatre’s Conservatory of Performing Arts, as well as cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction in the Mediterranean Ballroom.
A highlight of the evening occurred when artistic director Andrew Kato called the room to attention and eight tuxedoed ‘waiters’ stormed the dance floor for the a take on the classic ‘Waiters Gallop” scene from Hello, Dolly!, featuring a high-energy dance number complete with leaps, turns and pirouettes. The event also included exquisite video presentations honoring the gala’s honorees: community philanthropists Susan and Ross Johnson and corporate partner PNC Bank.
“In true theatrical form, the evening truly encompassed the Theatre’s mission of entertaining, educating and inspiring our community,” said the Theatre’s development director, Kathy Berman. “Many of our guests told me it was the best gala they’ve attended, and it gave everyone a chance to experience an exciting, joyous event for a great cause.”
Guests dined on petite five peppercorn spiced filet mignon and beef short rib ravioli with red wine braised shallots, and for dessert, a Hello, Dolly!-themed ice cream sundae with gold dusted sail, candied almonds and berries with chocolate dipped macaroons. They took turns bidding on lavish vacation packages and more in the grand auction, and danced the night away to the music of the Powerhouse Band in the Venetian Ballroom.
“It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying an unforgettable evening, and we are incredibly grateful for the tremendous support from the community,” Berman said. “As the largest regional theatre in South Florida, we could not continue to thrive without those that contribute to the Theatre’s success.”
Organized by a gala committee and led by co-chairs Roberta Golub and Marcia Cohn, the event’s Grand Benefactors were Roberta and Harvey Golub, Bonnie Osher and John Osher. VIP sponsors included Joan and Allen Bildner, Mr. and Mrs. Richard J Katz, Jr., Jane F. Napier and Diane and James Perrella. Corporate sponsors included PNC Bank, Tiffany & Co., Braman BMW Jupiter, The Capital Grille, Saks Fifth Avenue and Wilmington Trust.
