Junior and Senior Conservatory campers will present the full musicals Aladdin, Jr. and Little Shop of Horrors onstage
January 28, 2013 (Jupiter) – Children in Pre-K through 12th grade have a reason to celebrate this spring and summer break: the return of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s popular Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts camp programs!
With a flexible schedule that includes optional pre-care and after-care, budding young performers will participate in a broad range of theatre-related activities, including acting, dancing, singing, prop-making, improvisation, storytelling and more. Each summer camp concludes with a themed showcase performance, with the summer’s two largest shows – the Senior Conservatory’s Little Shop of Horrors and the Junior Conservatory’s Aladdin, Jr. – taking place this summer only in Jupiter Community High School’s 800-seat auditorium.
“Our vacation camps have something for everyone, from dance, magic and musical theatre to comedy,” said Julie Rowe, director of education for the Conservatory. “Our goal is to make sure that all of our students have fun, build confidence, express their creativity and have the opportunity to experience being part of a performance.”
A great way to introduce young children to theatre, the Conservatory’s vacation camp offerings include a secret agent-themed spring break camp (March 25 – 29) and the beloved Junior and Senior Conservatory summer camps (grades 3-5 and 6-12). MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE GARNERS TWENTY-THREE CARBONELL NOMINATIONS, THE MOST IN SOUTH FLORIDA
Theatre shines with South Florida’s annual equivalent of the Tony Awards®
January 25, 2013 – The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has earned 23 nominations for the 37th annual Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s equivalent of the Tony Awards®.
The Theatre garnered the most nominations of any of the nominated organizations, surpassing nominated theaters in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties. By show, the Theatre earned nine nominations for The Music Man, eight for Hello, Dolly!, four for Cabaret and two for Amadeus.
“We are honored that we are being recognized for our eclectic spectrum of work – including a drama (Amadeus), a darker-themed and important musical about our history (Cabaret) and two classic musicals that we re-envisioned (Hello, Dolly! and The Music Man),” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director.
As in years past, the Theatre finds itself with multiple Carbonell nominations in 10 categories, meaning that some of its shows are competing against one another. This leaves the theatre with double the chance of winning in different categories, with four of its five 2012 shows receiving nominations.
Director Marcia Milgrom Dodge was one of two artists to earn more than one Carbonell nomination for the Theatre’s shows: Best Director of a Musical and Best Choreography, both for Hello, Dolly! Actor Matt Loehr earned a Best Actor (Musical) nomination for his leading role as Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man, as well as a Best Supporting Actor (Musical) nomination for his role as Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly!
“I credit much of our success to the local and national artists – including actors, directors, musical directors and designers – who contribute their creative talent to our productions,” Kato said. “There is remarkable work being produced here in South Florida, and we’d like to congratulate all of the artists and designers who have been nominated.”
The news follows the successful early sell-out of the Theatre’s spectacular 10th anniversary gala, The 10 Event, set to take place Feb. 23 and feature surprise performances by more than 20 of the Theatre’s past stars.
It also comes just before the Theatre’s much-anticipated unveiling of shows for its 2013/14 season, to be announced Feb. 4.
“We promise that our next season of shows will continue to bring our audiences a wide array of programming,” Kato said. “These 23 nominations reaffirm that our peers appreciate the quality of work that we’re doing.”
And the Theatre’s current season is far from over. Playing through Jan. 27 is the classic musical Singin’ in the Rain, while the award-winning drama Doubt: A Parable (Feb. 3 – 17) will provide an eloquent and provocative investigation of truth and consequences. The smash season ends with the dazzling, high-energy musical Thoroughly Modern Millie (March 5 – 24).
Palm Beach County led with 45 nominations for its organizations. Two of the artists in the Theatre’s upcoming production of Doubt: A Parable – actor Jim Ballard and director J. Barry Lewis – earned Best Actor (Musical) and Best Director nominations for their roles in The Fantasticks at Palm Beach Dramaworks in West Palm Beach.
“We are so proud to share this region with the talented artists and incredible work produced by our friends at Palm Beach Dramaworks,” Kato said.
Celebrating the best shows and performances in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, Carbonell nominations encompass the entire length of South Florida with 18 companies receiving nods and 35 of the eligible shows that opened in 2012 being recognized.
The winners will be announced at the 37th annual Carbonell Awards ceremony, to be held on April 1 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale. MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE PRODUCES RIVETING DRAMA ‘DOUBT: A PARABLE’
Award-winning drama examines the blurry line between reality and gossip
January 16, 2013 (Jupiter) – It surrounds all of us every day: gossip, rumors, lies, assumptions, jealousy and power.
Yet doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty – as evidenced in the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s ambitious new drama Doubt: A Parable, onstage February 3 – 17.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® for best play, John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt: A Parable examines the blurry line between reality and gossip, discipline and compassion, truth and doubt. This powerhouse drama is an eloquent and provocative investigation of truth and consequences; a gripping mystery that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats until the final curtain.
Set in a Catholic school in the Bronx in 1964, the story centers on the school’s strict principal, Sister Aloysius, and her growing concerns about the school’s popular priest, Father Flynn. But with no proof, can there be certainty? Will judgment triumph over ambiguity?
“This drama is brilliantly written, and our cast is the most talented and established in our region,” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director. “We are delighted to be presenting such a richly textured dramatic work for our audiences here at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.”
Directed by multiple Carbonell Award-winning South Florida director J. Barry Lewis (resident director of Palm Beach Dramaworks), the play will feature a cast of acclaimed South Florida actors: Tony Award® nominee Maureen Anderman, Carbonell Award winners Jim Ballard and Julie Kleiner, and Silver Palm winner and three-time Carbonell nominee Karen Stephens.
“I am so pleased to be returning for the fifth time to the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, and to be working with such an extraordinary company on such a timely and gripping story of change,” Lewis said.
Anderman (Sister Aloysius) has appeared in eighteen Broadway shows over the last four decades, earning Drama Desk Award and Tony Award® nominations. She has been honored with the Theatre World Award, the Connecticut Critics Award and the Westport Arts Award for her lifetime work in the theatre, and recently starred in Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance at Palm Beach Dramaworks.
Locally, Ballard (Father Flynn) won Carbonell Awards for his roles in The Adding Machine and Urinetown and has appeared in numerous South Florida productions, including the multiple Carbonell-winning All My Sons in 2011. Kleiner (Sister James) has also appeared in many productions locally and recently earned a Carbonell for her performance in Hairspray.
Stephens (Mrs. Muller) garnered the New Times Best Actress Award and a Carbonell Nomination for her role in the regional premiere of Sarah Jones' one-woman Broadway show, Bridge & Tunnel. She also received the Silver Palm Award for her roles in Bridge & Tunnel, Clybourne Park and Eclipsed.
The acclaimed 2005 Broadway production of Doubt: A Parable inspired a popular 2008 film adaptation, Doubt, starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. All four received Academy Award nominations for their roles at the 81st Academy Awards.
Doubt: A Parable is sponsored by Jodie and Dan Hunt and The Roy A. Hunt Foundation. Tickets are now on sale now for the rest of the theatre’s 10th Anniversary season. For a complete schedule and tickets, call (561) 575-2223 or visit www.jupitertheatre.org.
