SET TO DAZZLE AT THE
MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE
Nearly 60 students from the Theatre’s Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts will perform the Tony Award-winning musical on the Theatre’s stage
May 3, 2018 (Jupiter) – Come on along and listen to the Lullaby of Broadway when the spectacular song-and-dance musical 42nd Street hits the Maltz Jupiter Theatre stage!
With performances slated for Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19, the musical will feature 59 local students in grades 6-12 and members of the Theatre’s college-level Professional Training Program. Directed by Lea Roy, the musical will feature choreography by Broadway veteran Brian Andrews and music direction from John Mercurio.
A beloved musical comedy classic, 42nd Street is an American Dream story that features show-stopping dance numbers and some of the greatest songs ever written, including “We’re in the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and “42nd Street.”
“It’s impossible not to love 42nd Street,” said Julie Rowe, the Theatre’s director of education. “It’s an iconic story of Broadway and a love letter to those who make theatre happen on the great white way. The choreography is dazzling, the music is infectious and the sheer number of dancing feet is unforgettable. Audience members of all ages are invited to come see this phenomenal musical on the Maltz Jupiter Theatre stage!”
With a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, lyrics by Al Dubin and Johnny Mercer and music by Harry Warren, the show’s original 1980 Broadway production became an instant hit and won the Tony Award® for Best Musical. The show’s 1984 London production won the Olivier Award for Best Musical and its 2001 Broadway revival won the Tony® for Best Revival.
Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and the subsequent 1933 Hollywood film adaptation, the show focuses on aspiring chorus performer Peggy Sawyer – a newbie from Allentown, Pa. – and her efforts to star in a giant musical directed by famed dictatorial Great White Way director Julian Marsh at the height of the Great Depression.
“Instantly cheer-inducing!” wrote the New York Times, while The Guardian dubbed it “the ultimate backstage fairytale” and Variety raved that 42nd Street sparkles with an “old-fashioned, lavish showmanship that shines from every last sequin.”
The production will take place on the Theatre’s professional regional stage, complete with costumes, sets, lighting and accompaniment from by the same orchestra that accompanies the Theatre’s season musicals.
The musical features design elements from a host of industry professionals, including scenic and properties design by the Theatre’s properties master Casey Blanton, sound design by the Theatre’s resident sound designer Marty Mets, lighting design by Michael Jon Burris and costume design by Jerry Sturdefant.
Performances of 42nd Street will take place at 7:30 p.m. on May 18 and 19 at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students. Call (561) 575-2223 for tickets or visit www.jupitertheatre.org.
