





HOUSE MANAGER
HOUSE MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION:
Part-time Seasonal (October – April), 5 hour shift per show (approximately 20-25 hours/week). This position will be shared by two people, alternating shifts.
The Front of House Manager (FOH) is responsible for the operation of the Front of House areas (lobby, auditorium, and other public areas). They serve as hosts, and fulfill vital life-safety roles for a variety of productions and engagements. This position encompasses bar/concession assistance, volunteer coordination and management for assigned activities including season productions, limited engagements, and Conservatory performances.
The House Manager is responsible for ensuring that the Theatre is clean and orderly before each performance.
They are responsible for the safe passage and conduct of the audience during the entire time that the audience is on the premises of the Theatre. The House Manager determines when the house is ready to open to an audience.
The House Manager is also responsible for training the ushers and ensuring that they are familiar with the Theatre, including all exit routes.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
a) Coordinate and ensure the smooth operation of the Front of House.
b) Ensure the safety of patrons, volunteers, and staff through the proper enforcement of emergency procedures;
- Train the ushers in their responsibilities in the event of an emergency.
- Show the ushers the location of all fire extinguishers, alarm pull stations, and nearest phones.
- Physically walk all emergency exit routes with all ushers, clearing pathways as necessary.
- Report and follow through on any malfunctions and safety concerns in the lobby and auditorium.
c) Ensure that the appropriate number of ushers with working flashlights are available.
d) Assist with bar operations (as needed);
- Assist bartenders with the point of sale system and service.
- Responsible for managing all cash drawers and end of shift reconciliations
e) Coordinate activities and the use of the lobby with Operations, Stage Management, and other appropriate staff.
f) Oversee pre-show usher meetings.
g) Resolve any patron issues; including problems that arise due to disorderly or unruly audience members; calling on Production Operations Manager for assistance or local authorities, if necessary.
h) Walk complete audience seating area and remove any obstacles or debris.
i) When deemed appropriate, in consultation with the Stage Manager and with all ushers in place, open the house to the audience.
j) Before the top of the show and again after intermission, communicate with the Stage Manager when the audience is settled to indicate that the show may proceed.
k) Throughout the performance remain aware of the theater audience in order to respond appropriately and in a timely way to any issue or emergency that may arise.
l) During intermission ensure ushers are at their stations and maintain an awareness of audience members as they move within the Theatre.
m) At the end of the performance ensure ushers remain at their stations until all audience members have cleared the house.
n) Assist ushers in walking the house and removing any items audience members may have left behind.
o) Dismiss ushers and complete nightly House Manager Report; including house counts, general show notes, lost and found, incident reporting and patron’s feedback.
p) Turn on/off lights/TV’s/monitors; comfortable with audio/visual equipment
q) Key holder; end of night lock up (FOH parking spot near theatre for safety)
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability and eagerness to be trained
- Experience with volunteers and practical knowledge of theatre environment is preferred but not required
- First Aid and CPR training preferred (training available as well)
- Excellent interpersonal skills, even temperament, ability to supervise effectively
- Strong organizational and management skills
- Sustained physical activity through lifting up to 50lb. (canisters and water bottles), pushing carts, lobby set up and remaining on feet for long periods of time
- Ability to multitask in a fast paced environment with many disruptions
- Microsoft Outlook and Excel skills
- Excellent customer service skills

This position reports to the Production Operations Manager
Pay is $20/hour
