Noises Off opens season forthe Maltz Jupiter Theatre
Jupiter, FL (October 14, 2008) - The Maltz Jupiter Theatre announces the first show of the season, Noises Off, performing November 11 - 23 live on stage. The Theatre kicks off its "We Create Art" 2008/2009 season, co-producing this production with the Cleveland Play House located in Cleveland, Ohio under the leadership of Artistic Director, Michael Bloom and Managing Director, Kevin Moore.
Noises Off, a backstage farce, will have you rolling in the aisles with its hilarious comedy depicting the onstage and backstage antics of a fifth-rate bumbling acting troupe touring its production of Nothing On, a sex farce. This comedy will take you behind the scenes of this outrageous production that will keep you laughing with misspoken lines, missed cues, slamming doors, offstage shenanigans and onstage slapstick.
Written by Michael Frayn in 1982, Noises Off originated from his idea that a play was funnier from behind the scenes than in front and needed to be shown to an audience this way. Hence, in this production the audience sees a play within a play from both sides creating the ultimate humorous plot. Frayn has received both the London Evening Standard Award and the Laurence Olivier Award for Noises Off.According to New York Time's theatre critic, Frank Rich, Noises Off is one of "the funniest shows on Broadway."
Noises Off features a complex two-story set that rotates between acts allowing the audience to see the front as well as the backstage point of view and back again. This production has one of the largest and most difficult physical productions that have been built for the Maltz Jupiter Theatre's stage.
"The scenery ends up being one of the major characters of the show as it facilitates the difficult landscape that the actors have to navigate," say Andrew Kato, Artistic Director. "The multiple doors, large staircase and second floor balcony all contribute to the massive living area that has to be dismantled and joined together for each of the show's three acts. The logistics to make this happen during the 15-minute intermission will be a major feat in itself!"
David Bell, Director of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre's Noises Off is returning to the Theatre for his second production. Bell also directed The Good War two years ago in the winter of 2005. He has received 35 Joseph Jefferson nominations, a Laurence Olivier nomination, five Carbonell nominations, the Dramalogue Award, The Bay Area Award, seven Atlanta Journal Constitution "Best" Awards, an Atlanta Circle of Dramatic Critics Award, two National Endowment Playwriting Awards, and two Helen Hayes Award nominations (winning one).
The outstanding production team for Noises Off also includes: James L. Joy, Scenic Designer; David Kay Mickelsen, Costume Designer; James C. Swonger, Sound Designer; Joseph Appelt, Lighting Designer; and Don Wadsworth, Voice/Text Coach.
