“ACADEMY” IS FIRST CHOICE FOR NEW EMERGING ARTIST SERIES AT THE MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE
Jupiter, FL (October 6, 2008) - The Maltz Jupiter Theatre highlights its “We Create Art” season campaign with the Emerging Artist Series in Musical Theater Playwriting. Funding for this new program was granted by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, from the Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, and the Roy A. Hunt Foundation. Launching the new series will be Academy, which will be performed on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 6:30pm. This special “insider’s event” will allow audiences to witness a critical step in the writer’s process; “the reading” presented on stage.
Academy tells the story of a prestigious prep school, where two senior boys make a bet involving an unsuspecting naïve freshman. But when the Faustian bargain goes too far, they realize their lives will never be the same again. With a 40-piece youth orchestra under the direction of Palm Beach Music Center and a mass choir under the direction of Young Singers of the Palm Beaches, Academy is a hymn to the journey every boy must traverse from childhood to manhood.
Academy’s book, music and lyrics are written by John Mercurio. With degrees from the Eastman School of Music and NYU, Mercurio was a member of the BMI Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop. As a recipient of awards from both the Jonathan Larson and the Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Musical Theater Foundation for his work in musical theatre, Mercurio also had his musical, Myth, developed at the Eugene O’Neil National Music Theater Conference and received the Georgia Holof Award for lyric writing.
Academy is directed by the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s Artist Director, Andrew Kato. According to Kato, “This project gives the Maltz Jupiter Theatre an opportunity to work with an exciting writer as well as collaborating with two other Palm Beach County creative youth organizations.”
The Palm Beach Music Center, which is assembling the orchestra, is a community facility to inspire children who have a passion for sharing music. This nurturing, safe location encompasses cultural diversity by joining musicians from different social economic backgrounds and varied nationalities throughout Palm Beach County.
Under the vocal direction of D. Shawn Berry, Artist Director of The Young Singers of the Palm Beaches, invitations were made to join the chorus for this reading. The Young Singers of the Palm Beaches is Palm Beach County’s premiere community-based children’s choir. They are a multi-racial, multi-cultural arts education organization based centrally in West Palm Beach at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.

Jupiter, FL (Wednesday, September 17, 2008) - The Maltz Jupiter Theatre announces its 7,000th subscriber for the upcoming We Create Art season! On the afternoon of Monday, September 15, Jeremy and Sharon Browne, unaware of the subscription count, came into the Theatre to buy four subscriptions and became the celebrated 7,000th subscriber! After five remarkable seasons, the Theatre is becoming one of Florida’s preeminent professional theatres.
Reaching the 7,000th subscriber has been an internal goal for the Theatre. "According to the Theatre Communications Group, the average number of subscribers at regional theatres across the country has declined by 10% over the last five years. So we are very proud and appreciate the community support at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in helping us achieve record attendance," says Director of Marketing, Jennifer Sardone-Shiner.
The Theatre has increased 700 subscribers from last year’s attendance of 6,300, according to Jay Johnson, Box Office Supervisor of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, which was an increase of 35% from 2006’s record.
As the Theatre moves forward, it is dedicated to bringing high-quality productions and educational programs to the community. In addition to record subscriptions, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre has achieved other milestones including the “Best Musical” Carbonell Award, South Florida’s highest honor for artistic excellence for the past two years as well as being the proud recipient of a prestigious John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation grant for its new Emerging Artist Series in Musical Theater Playwriting.

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s Conservatory of Performing Arts (COPA) offers classes in dance, voice, acting and musical theatre. COPA continues to add special guest workshops featuring local and national talent. “Part of our educational process includes teaching students and parents about the business of the arts,” says the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s Director of Education, Judy Gelman, “The audition is a critical part of getting work as an actor, singer or dancer. Therefore, we will offer audition workshops throughout the year. We are pleased to have Beverly Blanchette as part of this series.”
The first audition workshop, on Saturday, September 20th from 2pm – 5pm, features Beverly Blanchette, Dean of the Dreyfoos School of Arts Theatre. This workshop is limited to fifteen students and the fee is $95 to register. The format of the three-hour workshop will offer a question and answer session for parents during the last thirty minutes.
Blanchette will help students learn how to choose the right monologue to showcase their talents, find out how to market themselves for any type of audition and discover the business of the business including everything you need to know about agents, headshots, resumes, cold readings and the slate.
In addition to local experts, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre is able to draw from an amazing talent pool that comes from producing professional theatre each season. Past guest workshops have included Ron DeJesus, assistant choreographer to Twyla Tharp, Rodger Hess, the producer of Annie on Broadway and Jackie Bayne, from the Broadway cast of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
As a not-for-profit theatre the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, recognizing the importance of arts education for youth, has made its mission to “entertain, educate and inspire.” COPA offers a challenging, innovative and quality theatre experience to students of every ability and provides professional theatre training as well as tools to develop their imagination and self-esteem.
