THE MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE
SEEKS LOCAL YOUTH TALENT

FOR PUBLIC AUDITIONS FOR EVITA CHILDREN’S CHOIR!

(Jupiter, FL) - August 11, 2008 - The Maltz Jupiter Theatre will hold public auditions for the children’s choir in Evita to seek local talent! The spotlight is on South Florida this summer for kids to have their chance to perform center stage in a production that is part of the Theatre’s season. Auditions will be held at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre on Monday, August 25th from 3pm – 7pm for children ages 7 - 12 years old. All participants should be prepared to sing a song, learn a simple dance sequence and lyrics from an Evita selection.

According to Artistic Director, Andrew Kato, “This year’s campaign, ‘We Create Art’, will generate many opportunities for the community to become involved in what we do best, create great plays and musicals! This audition is one of those opportunities to take part in the complex process of putting a show together.”

Evita, an epic rock opera will be the largest production ever mounted at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre since its doors opened four years ago. The cast will consist of more than 16 actors and a children’s choir of twelve local singers. The choir will be
double-cast for the entire run of the production with alternates to fill in as needed.

Rachel Blavatnik, Associate Producer of the Theatre, who is responsible for scheduling auditions, says, “There are so many talented children in this community that will now have the rare opportunity to be on a professional stage. If these children are chosen to be a part of Evita, they will work side-by-side with some of the country’s greatest professional directors, designers and actors!”

Winner of seven Tony Awards, Evita is the compelling and captivating mega-musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice that tells the story of the life of Argentina’s infamous Eva Person as she climbed her way up the ladder of success to share the power of her country’s leader, General Juan Peron. Performances of Evita at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre start March 17 and run through April 5th, 2009.

FOUR LOCAL STARS DISCOVERED IN CONTEST AT
THE MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE

(Jupiter, FL) July 22, 2008 - The Maltz Jupiter Theatre Guild sold out its recent fundraiser talent show, Palm Beach Idols, at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre on Saturday, July 19th. Participants from all over Palm Beach and Martin Counties auditioned June 21st at the Theatre to compete in the finals. "The level of talent that auditioned for the event was extremely high. It was very difficult narrowing down the 80-plus competitors to the 23 slots for the final event," says Andrew Kato, Artist Director of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

Local residents took the stage to show off their remarkable talents to a packed house. Contestants, ranging from seven years old and up, performed over a two hour production that included singers, dancers and instrumentalists that varied from Billy Joel to Hannah Montana.

"People often assume that great talent is found in New York or California. The reality is that talent exists everywhere and it just takes opportunity and nurturing to bring it forward. Palm Beach Idol gives that chance to locals to be showcased in a professional setting, and possibly win a cash prize at the same time," says Kato.

There were four winners at Palm Beach Idols, one for each of the three age categories and one overall winner from the group. Each winner was awarded $250 from The Guild and $250 from FAU Lifelong Learning. The overall winner of the night, Kiel Peterson, wowed the judges and audience with his dancing feet in the tap routine, "Boys Are Back In Town." In the youth category, Gabrielle Craft stunned the judges with her performance of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?" a hit made popular in the 50's. Next, the teen category was won by composer, Anthony Espina, performing "Our Fallen Radiance," an original piece that was written for piano and cello. In the adult division, Camilo Narvarrete and Don Farina performed a hip-hop dance to "Nobody".

"As the fundraising arm of the Conservatory of Performing Arts, the Guild was happy to
co-produced the 2008 Palm Beach Idols with The Maltz Jupiter Theatre," says Eileen Weissmann, Event Coordinator, "This year's event was a huge success and raised over $10,000!"

The Guild's primary mission is to raise money for an endowment fund designed to provide, in perpetuity, opportunities for our youth and young adults to participate in the Conservatory of Performing Arts' programs. The Guild also serves as volunteers and ambassadors of the Theatre by advancing the mission of the Theatre and its many programs.

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre opened in February 2004 as a 550-seat, not-for-profit regional theatre at the former Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre location. The Theatre is a member of the prestigious League of Resident Theatres. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is located east of U.S. Highway 1 at 1001 East Indiantown Road and State Road A1A in Jupiter.

MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE RECEIVES
JOHN D. AND CATHERINE T. MACARTHUR FUND GRANT

FOR NEW EMERGING ARTIST SERIES IN MUSICAL THEATER PLAYWRITING

eas_color_web.jpg

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Jupiter, FL (July 9, 2008) - The Maltz Jupiter Theatre announces it has received the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fund granted by the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties.  This prestigious grant was awarded to the Theatre for the development of four new musicals as part of the new Emerging Artist Series in Musical Theater Playwriting.

Four new unpublished works, selected from a nationwide submission request, will receive a staged reading during the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s 2008/2009 season. Additionally, the Theatre will also host a one week writer’s workshop for one creative team chosen from among the year’s readings. “We are truly honored to have received the financial support from the Community Foundation to contribute to the creation of new work in Palm Beach County,” said Tricia Trimble, Managing Director, who proposed the grant last year. “I wanted to find funding for a new project that our Artistic Director was passionate about”.

“The timing on this grant could not be more perfect,” said Andrew Kato, Artistic Director of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. “This year will celebrate the complex process of putting a production together through our “We Create Art” campaign.  The Emerging Artist Series in Musical Theater Playwriting will allow our audiences to witness several musicals as they go through their development stages.”

As a member of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), the Maltz Jupiter Theatre will reach out to the national theatrical community with the hopes of contributing to the art form.  New writers often begin their careers through similar reading series that are presented across the country such as the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference in Connecticut and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre.

Kato says, “It is important that we create new work in musical theater that reflects the world we live in.  More and more theatrical producers are looking to regional theatres to develop productions that are contemporary and relevant.”

In just a half-century, a nationwide movement of not-for-profit resident theatres has transformed the cultural landscape, replacing Broadway as the originator of new American works.  While the need for a venue for emerging theatrical artists to hone their work is continual, the cost for producing new works on Broadway has become prohibitive, and regional theatres have taken on a recognized role in developing new theatrical works as well as engaging and educating the public in the process.

The writing finalists will be announced at the beginning of October.  Limited seating to the reading series will be made available to the public.  More information and submission guidelines are available at www.jupitertheatre.org.

(Jupiter, FL) June ##, 2008 – The Maltz Jupiter Theatre Conservatory of Performing Arts (COPA) students will present their rendition of the everlasting childhood story of Peter Pan, the Musical on Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26.  Eighty students enrolled in the Junior Summer Conservatory ages 8 – 13 will sing, dance and act in this classic musical.  During the three week camp, all eighty students must audition, learn the songs and dances of the musical, and finally perform to a public audience on the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s professional stage. At the same time, these same eighty students will learn backstage skills such as building and painting the set and scenery.

Judy Gelman, Director of Education at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre and Director and Choreographer of Peter Pan, the Musical says, “My first trip to see live theatre was to Peter Pan and hooked me for life!  My dad took me to see the musical when I was five years old and I will never forget the experience.”  Gelman chose Peter Pan, the Musical in order to get the campers excited about theatre and performance.  “With such a large cast to work with, this musical requires a lot of interaction amongst performers so they can learn the meaning of ensemble work,” says Gelman.

Peter Pan is the tale that never ages just like the characters involved in the story.  This heart-felt story about Neverland and its magical world includes such recognized songs as “I’m Flying”, “Neverland”, “I won’t grow up” and many more!

Showtimes are 7:30 pm on both evenings. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students under 18 and are available at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Box Office, online at www.jupitertheatre.org or by phone at 561-575-2223 or 800-445-1666.
